Anthony Esan pleaded guilty to attacking Army Lt. Col. Mark Teeton with knives in a hate-fueled assault.
Anthony Esan, 25, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and possession of two knives in the July 23, 2024, attack on Lieutenant Colonel Mark Teeton, a uniformed Army officer, outside his home in Chatham, Kent.
Prosecutors described the assault as “vicious and deliberate,” motivated by Teeton’s military uniform.
Esan, who had searched online for knives, terrorist attacks, and videos of violent incidents including the 2013 Woolwich killing, had previously applied to join the British Army but was rejected due to medical issues and mental health concerns.
Forensic evidence included two “Rambo” knife packages recovered from his bedroom.
Despite severe stab wounds, Teeton survived, with prosecutors calling it “nothing short of miraculous.” The sentencing, ongoing at Maidstone Crown Court, includes victim impact statements from Teeton and his wife.
