SUNY Schenectady and Schenectady County are proposing to remove Washington Avenue south of State Street and reconfigure I-890’s Exit 4C to improve safety, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance connectivity between the campus and downtown.
The “Malta” concept, supported by county leaders and college officials, would eliminate the current dangerous intersection—responsible for over 20% of crashes in three years—replace it with a green space, reroute traffic to Exit 4B, and improve access to the planned SUNY Schenectady Aquatic Center.
A federal BUILD grant application is due by late February 2026, with construction potentially starting in 2030 or 2031 if approved.
The final environmental study is set for approval soon.
