A Skowhegan police officer shot and killed Kenneth “Carlos” Ortega, 30, of New York, on February 7, 2026, after Ortega allegedly fired a gun into the air and pointed it at officers during a response to a report of suspicious activity at a vacant home on Water Street.
Police had been called following news of the resident’s recent death.
Officers encountered Ortega and a woman walking away and ordered them to stop; Ortega allegedly refused, discharged a firearm, and then aimed it at officers, prompting Officer Benaiah Willhoite to shoot him.
Ortega died at Redington Fairview General Hospital.
Willhoite has been placed on administrative leave, and the Maine Attorney General’s Office will investigate the shooting.
