Researchers found 148 lichen species in Odisha’s Simlipal Park, including two new to India and one new to the state, with potential medical benefits.
Researchers from Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanja Deo University have discovered 148 lichen species in Simlipal National Park, Odisha—the highest count in the state.
Among them, Physciella melanchra is new to India and Cladonia fruticulosa is new to Odisha.
The lichens, found across the park’s core, buffer, and transition zones, contain bioactive compounds with antimicrobial, antioxidant, and potential anti-cancer properties.
Collected samples are stored in the university’s Lichen Repository for future study.
The findings highlight Simlipal’s ecological richness and the medical potential of lichens, which thrive in harsh environments through symbiotic relationships.
The research, funded by the Odisha government, underscores the importance of preserving biodiversity for scientific and health advancements.
