The NGT demands government responses on rising forest fires in Maharashtra, citing poor enforcement of past fire prevention measures.
The National Green Tribunal has directed the central and state governments, along with statutory bodies, to respond to a plea over a surge in forest fires, particularly in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli, Chandrapur, and Amravati districts.
The tribunal, led by Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Expert Member Dr. A. Senthil Vel, is seeking detailed reports on fire prevention efforts, the use of allocated funds, and the effectiveness of alert systems.
The petition highlights weak implementation of past NGT directives and the National Forest Fire Management Project, urging a nationwide fire-risk governance framework.
The case is set for further hearing on April 23.
