Italy will not join U.S. President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace” due to constitutional restrictions, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said, citing Article 11 of the Italian constitution that requires equal conditions among members—conditions unmet if Trump holds veto power and final authority. The board, launched at the Davos forum, aims to oversee Gaza’s reconstruction and may expand its mandate, but its structure has drawn criticism as a “pay to play” system requiring $1 billion for permanent seats. Italy remains open to supporting peace efforts, such as police training in Gaza, but will not participate in the board, which is set to hold its first meeting in Washington on February 19. The UN has reiterated that the Security Council holds primary responsibility for global peace and security.
