India launches ₹5,129 crore hydropower project on Chenab River, accelerating development amid suspended Indus Waters Treaty.
India has launched a Rs 5,129 crore tender for the 1,856 MW Sawalkot Hydroelectric Project on the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir, the first major hydropower initiative approved by the Modi government after suspending the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan in 2025.
The project, to be built in two phases between the Baglihar and Salal dams, will use a run-of-the-river design and take about nine years to complete.
It is part of a broader push to accelerate four key Chenab River hydropower projects, including Pakal Dul and Kiru, with completion targets by 2026–2028.
The move reflects India’s strategy to maximize its rights to western rivers under the treaty’s suspended framework, raising concerns in Pakistan over downstream water access.
