A global search launched in Beijing selects 100 performers to honor Kunqu Opera’s 25th UNESCO anniversary, celebrating its themes of love and freedom through diverse, innovative expressions.
To mark the 25th anniversary of Kunqu Opera’s UNESCO recognition, a global initiative launched in Beijing on January 31, 2026, aims to select 100 performers worldwide who embody the spirit of Du Liniang from The Peony Pavilion.
Organized by the Edinburgh Art Committee and Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre, the project includes 10 professional Kunqu artists from China, Hong Kong, and Macao; 10 performers from other Chinese opera genres or ballet; and 80 non-professionals passionate about Kunqu.
Participants will be evaluated on passion, innovation, and cultural promotion efforts, with finalists potentially performing at the Edinburgh International Festival.
The campaign highlights Kunqu’s timeless themes of love and freedom, building on recent international successes including awards and sold-out shows, and seeks to expand the art form’s global reach through contemporary expression.
