On February 8, 2026, Indian President Droupadi Murmu honored Dr. Zakir Husain, India’s third President and first Muslim to hold the office, on his birth anniversary by paying floral tributes at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Born in 1897 in Hyderabad, Husain was a renowned educationist, co-founder of Jamia Millia Islamia, and served as Vice-Chancellor of both Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia, advancing inclusive education.
A key figure in India’s freedom struggle, he held high office as Governor of Bihar and Vice President before becoming President in 1967.
He died in office in 1969, becoming the first President to do so.
His legacy endures through his commitment to democratic values, secularism, and education as a tool for national development.
