Coast Guard ends search for two missing Santa Cruz surfers after 90 miles scanned.
The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for two missing surfers near Santa Cruz Lighthouse, off West Cliff Drive, after more than 90 miles were searched over 10.5 hours.
The search began Friday evening when a report came in around 6:30 p.m. that the men were in distress about 600 feet offshore, in 7- to 9-foot waves and 54-degree water.
Despite efforts by a lifeboat from Monterey, a helicopter from San Francisco, and the Coast Guard Cutter Alder, along with support from local agencies, no sign of the surfers was found.
The decision to suspend the search was based on environmental conditions and survivability assessments.
Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Coast Guard Sector San Francisco at 415-399-7399.
