Bangladesh reports its first 2026 Nipah death linked to raw palm sap, with no spread detected.
Bangladesh confirmed its first Nipah virus death of 2026, involving a woman in her 40s or 50s from Naogaon district who died after consuming raw date palm sap.
She developed symptoms on January 21, including fever, headache, and neurological issues, and passed away on January 28.
The World Health Organization confirmed the case, noting no travel history and no additional cases among 35 contacts.
The virus, linked to fruit bats and transmitted through contaminated food, has caused annual outbreaks in Bangladesh since 2001, with four fatal cases reported in 2025.
No vaccine or treatment exists, and while two cases were recently confirmed in India, the WHO says international spread risk remains low.
