Aamir Khan urges India to expand cinemas to 15,000, but experts doubt feasibility without consistent hit content.
Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has called for India to expand its cinema screens from 9,000 to 15,000, citing China and the U.S. as benchmarks and pointing to the success of Dhurandhar as evidence that wider distribution could boost box office earnings.
He emphasized the need for better theatrical infrastructure to reach audiences across India’s diverse regions.
However, industry experts like exhibitor Akshaye Rathi have questioned the feasibility, noting that only a few films annually achieve blockbuster status, making widespread screen expansion financially unsustainable due to high costs, low occupancy, and competition from OTT platforms.
Rathi stressed that more screens are only viable if consistent, widely appealing content is produced.
