A 10-year-old steam enthusiast from North Yorkshire is a finalist for a national heritage railway award after becoming a diesel locomotive apprentice.
Charlie Bauckham, a mechanical apprentice at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, has been shortlisted for the Heritage Railway Association’s Rising Star award. Starting as a volunteer in September 2023, he now maintains diesel locomotives at Grosmont Motive Power Depot, supports test runs, and is training to become a qualified duty fitter. His journey began at age 10, inspired by steam engines, and he is pursuing a Level 3 qualification. The NYMR’s apprenticeship program, which includes training in traction, rolling stock, and conservation, helps young people launch careers in heritage railways. Winners of the HRA Awards will be announced in March 2026.
