Webb Telescope finds organic molecules in nearby galaxy’s core, hinting at natural prebiotic chemistry.
The James Webb Space Telescope has detected an abundance of small organic molecules, including benzene, methane, and the methyl radical—first seen outside our galaxy—in the dusty core of IRAS 07251–0248, one of the nearest ultra-luminous galaxies.
Using infrared instruments, Webb revealed complex chemistry driven by cosmic rays breaking down carbon-rich dust, releasing molecules into gas.
The findings, published in Nature Astronomy, challenge existing models and suggest galactic centers may act as natural prebiotic molecule factories.
