University of Dayton President Eric Spina plans to retire in June 2027 after 11 years leading the university and nearly 40 years in higher education.
He announced the decision following months of reflection, citing personal reasons.
During his tenure, he oversaw major projects including The Hub Powered by PNC Bank, the Greater West Dayton Incubator, the Roger Glass Center for the Arts, and the onMain development with Premier Health.
He also led the We Soar campaign, which raised $453 million—13% above its goal.
The university’s board has launched a search for a successor with help from an executive search firm.
Board Chair Deb Tobias praised Spina for his transparent leadership, community focus, and role in strengthening philanthropy and inclusion.
Spina previously held leadership roles at Syracuse University and holds degrees from Carnegie Mellon and Princeton.
