UN approves aid waivers for North Korea amid ongoing weapons development and diplomatic silence.
The UN Security Council’s sanctions committee has unanimously approved waivers for 17 humanitarian projects in North Korea, clearing the way for aid delivery after delays since early 2025.
The move, reportedly backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, lifts previous U.S. holds that had stalled aid over concerns of diversion, allowing organizations including UNICEF and South Korean and U.S. groups to resume long-pending initiatives.
Despite the approval, North Korea has shown little interest in diplomacy, continuing weapons development and rejecting past aid offers.
No official announcement has been made, and the last known UN humanitarian visit was in July 2024.
