A two-year NSF probe cleared UTEP’s Ahsan Choudhuri of misconduct in a canceled $160M aerospace grant, though UTEP and a lawmaker demanded accountability.
A two-year NSF investigation found no wrongdoing in a 2024 UTEP-led grant application seeking $160 million for aerospace manufacturing in El Paso, clearing former principal investigator Ahsan Choudhuri of misconduct.
The grant was suspended and canceled in April 2024 amid allegations, with funds redirected.
Choudhuri, who retired and launched a private aerospace company, said he was relieved but saddened by the loss of the project and its economic impact.
UTEP President Heather Wilson maintained the application contained false claims about university resources and defended her decision to report the issue, despite the NSF’s findings.
U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar called for accountability, citing reputational harm and lost opportunity.
The NSF declined to provide further details on the investigation.
