Travis Johansen leaves South Dakota to become Rutgers’ defensive coordinator for 2026.
Travis Johansen, former South Dakota head coach, is set to join Rutgers as defensive coordinator for the 2026 season, following his one-year tenure at USD.
Johansen previously led South Dakota’s defense to a top-five national ranking in 2024.
In response, the University of South Dakota named Matt Vitzthum, its co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, as the program’s 32nd head coach.
Vitzthum helped guide the Coyotes to FCS Playoffs quarterfinals in each of his two seasons.
Rutgers, aiming to improve after a 5-7 record in 2025, also added quarterback Dylan Lonergan and returns key offensive players like Antwan Raymond and KJ Duff.
