A special prosecutor will handle abuse cases against North Carolina’s Word of Faith Fellowship after the DA recused himself over impartiality concerns.
A special prosecutor will now handle criminal cases against the Word of Faith Fellowship, a North Carolina religious group, after the district attorney stepped aside due to concerns over impartiality.
The cases stem from allegations by Matthew Fenner, a former member who says he was beaten and choked for two hours in 2013 during a church-led "blasting" session meant to expel "homosexual demons."
Fenner claims the district attorney became disengaged as the trial date neared and offered a plea deal he rejected.
While an independent investigator found no evidence of bias, the case has drawn national attention amid broader allegations of abuse and control by the church, which has seen its membership decline.
No new trial date has been set.
