Rep. Juan Vargas was blocked by ICE from entering a San Diego detention center during an unannounced visit, violating his congressional oversight rights.
Rep. Juan Vargas (D-Calif.) was denied entry to the Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego on Friday during an unannounced oversight visit, marking the first time he has been turned away despite his legal right to inspect the facility.
He said the denial came after reports of poor conditions, including inadequate food, lack of medical care, and detainees held in cage-like cells, and that the decision was made by ICE, not facility leadership.
Vargas called the action a violation of congressional oversight rights and a sign of systemic obstruction, citing a federal court ruling that supports unannounced visits.
He plans to pursue legal action and has called for ICE's dismantling, citing constitutional concerns.
The facility is operated by CoreCivic, which denies the allegations.
Neither ICE nor DHS commented.
