Patrick McDonagh got 4.5 years for causing severe brain injuries in a 2021 petrol station crash.
Patrick McDonagh, 25, was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for dangerous driving that caused severe, life-altering brain injuries to 66-year-old Michael Whitfield during a November 2021 incident at a petrol station.
The crash, which occurred in broad daylight without alcohol or drugs, left Whitfield in an induced coma for five weeks and dependent on full-time care, unable to walk or speak clearly.
Whitfield, a retired bookkeeper with a history of hydrocephalus, remains in a specialist care facility.
McDonagh, who had no prior convictions at the time but now has 17, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge after originally facing assault charges.
The judge called the harm catastrophic and avoidable, imposing a five-year sentence to run consecutively with a seven-year term for a separate 2024 crime, with six months suspended.
