The Oakland Athletics have hired Mark McGwire, 62, as a special assistant in player development, marking his return to the organization where he played 12 seasons and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2019.
McGwire, a nine-time All-Star and AL Rookie of the Year in 1987, remains the franchise’s all-time home run leader with 363 and ranks fourth in RBIs with 941.
His career is complicated by his 2010 admission of using performance-enhancing drugs, which has kept him out of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Prior to this role, he served as a hitting coach and bench coach for several MLB teams, including the Cardinals and Padres.
The new position allows him to contribute his expertise without full-time coaching duties.
