A museum corrects a century-old mix-up between two men named John McGregor in Chatham-Kent.
The Wallaceburg and District Museum has clarified a long-standing historical mix-up involving two men named John McGregor in early Chatham-Kent.
Research by genealogist Kathy Stone and descendant Leslie Palimaka revealed that the "Captain" John McGregor, a Scottish-born soldier who fought in the War of 1812 and lost an arm at the Battle of Longwoods, received 343 hectares of land in Wallaceburg for his service.
This land now houses the Sydenham and District Museum.
The "merchant" John McGregor, who may have owned a mill and given his name to McGregor’s Creek, was a different person.
The confusion, persistent for decades, stemmed from similar names and timelines.
