Martin McDonnell, 32, of Naas, Kildare, was sentenced to two years in prison with 10 months suspended after pleading guilty to producing a knife and stealing a cigarette in a June 13, 2024, incident at Wellington Quay.
The court heard he approached a man walking home from a night shift, demanded a cigarette, and pulled a large knife when refused.
After the man complied, McDonnell hugged him, kissed him on the neck, and ended the encounter with a fist bump.
The judge noted the fear caused by the knife’s use but acknowledged McDonnell’s guilty plea and remorse.
McDonnell, who has 72 prior convictions and a history of trauma, homelessness, mental health challenges, and substance use, was sentenced back-dated to June 26, 2024, and ordered to remain under probation supervision for 18 months after release.
