Jim Schwartz resigned as Browns' defensive coordinator after being passed over for head coach, despite leading a top defense.
Jim Schwartz has resigned as the Cleveland Browns’ defensive coordinator after three seasons, stepping down following his omission from the team’s head coaching hire.
Despite leading a top-tier defense that ranked first in total yards allowed in 2023 and fourth in 2025, Schwartz was passed over when the Browns named Todd Monken as head coach on January 29.
Monken confirmed he had spoken with Schwartz but said no immediate changes to the defensive system were planned.
The Browns are now searching for a new defensive coordinator, while Schwartz, who remains under contract for one more season, plans to sit out the 2026 season.
