Jackson appoints Dr. RaShall Brackney, first Black woman to lead its police force, pending council approval.
Jackson Mayor John Horhn has appointed Dr. RaShall M. Brackney, a retired Pittsburgh police commander and former chief in Charlottesville and at George Washington University, as the city’s next police chief.
The appointment, pending City Council approval, follows a national search and marks Brackney as the first African American woman to lead a special operations division in the U.S. She brings over 30 years of law enforcement experience and is known for her focus on accountability, community trust, and crime reduction.
Brackney, who has family ties to Jackson, will begin meeting with city officials and residents in mid-February.
The city saw a 13.4% drop in violent crime and a 20.2% decrease in property crime in 2025.
Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones, who served as interim chief, will step down upon confirmation.
