HSE negotiates patient transfers from overcrowded UHL to Bon Secours Limerick to ease crisis.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) is negotiating with Bon Secours Hospital Limerick, a €213 million private facility opened in September 2024, to transfer patients from University Hospital Limerick (UHL) during peak demand to ease chronic overcrowding.
UHL, the only 24-hour emergency department serving over 400,000 people across multiple counties, continues to face severe bed shortages, with admitted patients often waiting on trolleys.
Despite recent expansions, including a new 96-bed unit, overcrowding persists.
The HSE and Bon Secours are finalizing an agreement to transfer appropriate patients, with an understanding expected soon.
This move supports broader government-backed plans to address the crisis, including expanding UHL’s site, developing a second campus under shared governance, or building a new Model 3 hospital with an emergency department in the mid-west.
