Hall of Fame quarterback Sonny Jurgensen, a Wilmington native and Duke alumnus, has died at 91. He played 18 seasons in the NFL, starting with the Philadelphia Eagles before being traded to Washington in 1964, where he became a franchise icon. Jurgensen threw for 32,224 yards and 255 touchdowns, earning five All-Pro honors and a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1983. He led the league in passing yards and touchdowns multiple times, was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 1960s, and had his No. 9 jersey retired by the Washington Commanders.
