Chhari-Dhandh, a 22,700-hectare wetland in Gujarat’s Kachchh district, was designated a Ramsar Site on January 31, 2026, becoming Gujarat’s fifth and Kachchh’s first wetland of international importance.
The site, spanning desert, grassland, and thorn forest ecosystems, supports over 283 bird species, including 11 globally threatened and 9 Near Threatened species, and is a critical stopover for migratory birds like the Grey Hypocolius and cranes.
First declared a Conservation Reserve in 2008, it now attracts thousands of foreign tourists from over 52 countries, primarily from the Nordic nations, the U.S., and the U.K.
