A California union pushes bill to make remote work permanent, citing savings and flexibility despite governor’s return-to-office mandate.
A California state union representing over 15,000 engineers is pushing legislation to make remote work a permanent option, even as Governor Newsom mandates most employees return to offices four days a week.
The bill, introduced by Assemblymember Alex Lee, would require agencies to offer telework "to the fullest extent possible," provide justification for in-person requirements, and publish a dashboard tracking annual savings from remote work.
A 2024 state auditor report estimated $225 million in annual savings if employees worked from home at least three days weekly.
The union says the policy would benefit employees, taxpayers, and the environment without challenging Newsom’s order.
The bill aims to promote transparency and long-term flexibility amid ongoing struggles with office infrastructure and varying remote work policies across agencies.
