A 9-year-old Illinois boy suffered burns from a microwaving a NeeDoh toy in a viral challenge, now the fourth such case this year.
A nine-year-old Illinois boy is recovering from second-degree burns to his face and hands after microwaving a NeeDoh sensory toy as part of a viral social media challenge, causing it to explode and release hot gel.
The incident, which occurred in late January, led to emergency treatment and transfer to Loyola University Medical Center’s Burn Center, where it was confirmed as the fourth similar case treated that year.
Though the burns were severe and near his eye, doctors say his vision is unaffected, and he is expected to make a full recovery.
The boy, Caleb Chabolla, was inspired by a friend who had tried the trend without injury, despite widespread online videos promoting it.
His family and medical professionals are urging caution, warning that such challenges can lead to serious harm, especially for children who may not understand the risks.
