Walker County approved a gondola project to ease traffic, with construction set for 2027.
The Walker County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a rezoning request on February 5, 2026, allowing Rock City Enterprises to build a gondola system connecting Flintstone, Georgia, to Lookout Mountain, with construction potentially starting in January 2027.
The project, estimated to cost $10 million to $15 million, aims to reduce traffic on Ochs Highway by shifting motor coaches and school buses to the aerial transit.
The gondola would run from Blowing Springs Farm to the park’s main entrance, with a redesigned mountaintop entryway planned.
A separate approval from the Lookout Mountain Planning Commission is still required.
Officials say the project could create 20 full-time jobs and generate $900,000 in annual sales tax, while a traffic study is under review by GDOT.
