UCLA fired Jonathan Perkins, its former DEI director, after he publicly expressed approval of the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was killed on September 10, 2025, at Utah Valley University.
The university cited his comments on Bluesky—where he said it was acceptable to be happy when someone who targeted him and his community died—as severely undermining trust and damaging the credibility of his office.
Perkins plans to sue, claiming his statements were protected by the First Amendment.
He has launched a GoFundMe campaign, raising $10,000 toward a $25,000 goal, to cover legal and relocation costs, with funds also supporting his pets.
The alleged killer of Kirk has been charged with aggravated murder.
