Stormont Justice Minister Naomi Long has urged striking criminal barristers to compromise in resolving a legal aid fee dispute that has disrupted court proceedings and harmed victims and witnesses, including the family of murder victim Chloe Mitchell.
She called the strike unethical and a breach of professional standards, warning of escalating financial pressures with projected budget shortfalls reaching £215 million by 2028-29.
Long said her department’s reasonable proposal was rejected by the Criminal Bar Association, and stressed that further funding is not feasible without assurance of restored services.
Ongoing talks with the Bar Council continue, and she plans to meet with affected families to address concerns.
