British abstract artist Rebecca Salter, the Royal Academy’s first female president, has been awarded the Freedom of the City of London for her significant contributions to contemporary art.
Recognized for her internationally exhibited work held in major institutions including the Tate, British Museum, and Yale Centre for British Art, Salter studied ceramics in Bristol and explored Japanese printmaking during a Leverhulme Scholarship in Kyoto, shaping her minimalist, multimedia style.
A Royal Academician since 2014 and former Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools, she emphasized the arts’ role in fostering understanding during challenging times.
The honor, presented at the Guildhall Art Gallery, was praised by the City of London Corporation, a major UK arts funder, which highlighted her decades-long leadership and impact.
Previous recipients include Cate Blanchett and Sir Matthew Bourne.
