Manchester to offer free school bus passes to 8,000 homeless children, bypassing distance rules.
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has launched a plan to provide free school bus passes to up to 8,000 children in temporary housing, offering free Bee Network travel to and from school regardless of distance.
The initiative, funded by the mayor’s office and backed by eight MPs and charities, aims to ease transportation burdens for homeless families, many of whom face long commutes and must choose between costs and staying near schools and support networks.
The program will override the current government rule limiting free travel to those living more than two miles from school, with implementation expected later this year.
