Illinois Republicans introduce bills to combat rising domestic violence deaths, including harsher penalties and faster firearm removal.
Illinois Senate Republicans have introduced legislation to strengthen domestic violence protections following a 140% increase in related deaths since 2022.
The bills, aimed at deterring abusers and supporting victims, include shifting the burden of proof to defendants seeking pretrial release after violating protection orders, doubling minimum jail times for violations, and automatically classifying such violations as felonies.
The measures follow high-profile cases where repeated violations preceded fatal outcomes, and build on Karina’s Law, which allows emergency firearm removal without a court hearing.
The bills are under committee review with no vote date set.
