A Houston surgeon was indicted for falsifying records to block liver transplants, leading to at least three patient deaths.
Dr. John Stevenson Bynon Jr., a Houston transplant surgeon, was indicted on five federal charges for allegedly falsifying medical records between March 2023 and March 2024 to make five patients ineligible for liver transplants.
Prosecutors say the actions, which went undisclosed to patients and medical teams, blocked access to donor organs and contributed to the deaths of at least three patients.
Bynon, former director at Memorial Hermann Health System, pleaded not guilty and maintains his actions were lawful.
The hospital temporarily shut down its transplant programs in 2024 and was placed in “not in good standing” by the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network in 2025.
Several families have filed civil lawsuits.
If convicted, Bynon faces up to five years in prison per count.
