A Florida school paraprofessional was arrested for allegedly kicking a 17-year-old student with Down syndrome during a behavioral incident.
Dontel Wright, a 50-year-old Seabreeze High School paraprofessional in Daytona Beach, was arrested on February 5, 2026, on child abuse charges after allegedly kicking a 17-year-old student with Down syndrome during a behavioral incident.
The student, distressed over a favorite teacher’s absence, ran through hallways and hid under gym bleachers, where Wright allegedly followed, pulled them out, and caused their head to whip backward.
No injuries were reported.
The student’s parents plan to press charges.
Wright has been removed from campus, is held without bond, and faces a child abuse charge.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office and school district are investigating.
