Bangladesh’s Chief Election Commissioner will swear in new MPs after the Feb. 12 election due to absence of Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
Due to the absence of Bangladesh’s Speaker and Deputy Speaker— one missing and the other imprisoned—their usual role in swearing in new MPs after the February 12 election is unfeasible.
The Chief Election Commissioner, AMM Nasir Uddin, will administer the oaths under constitutional authority, as permitted by Article 148(2A) and Schedule 3 when no other official is available within three days.
The President may appoint an alternative, such as the Chief Justice, but the government has not yet decided on the final procedure.
Preparations are underway for the swearing-in, with the interim administration also implementing economic measures and election logistics.
