A disability pensioner in Western Australia, Pope, is involved in a seven-year legal battle with mining magnate Gina Rinehart over fencing between their properties, alleging inadequate barriers have allowed feral animals to cross, causing disease and livestock damage.
Pope, who cares for neighbor Mary Kakaroubas’s animals in exchange for fence maintenance, says she’s struggled to find legal representation after contacting 45 firms and exhausting aid resources, with many citing the vast power imbalance.
Rinehart’s office has declined to comment but disputes Pope’s claims.
Legal experts have questioned the strength of Pope’s case, and she’s been advised to appear in court in person.
The matter is set to return on March 5, 2026.
