UNO will merge with LSU in 2026 due to financial and enrollment challenges.
The University of New Orleans will become LSU New Orleans on July 1, 2026, as part of a major transition to address financial instability, declining enrollment, and urgent infrastructure needs.
The move, supported by a $20 million state commitment and strategic cost savings, includes joining LSU’s cybersecurity network, integrating academic and administrative systems, and launching a $2 million marketing campaign.
Enrollment has dropped from 17,000 pre-Katrina to about 5,700 in 2025, and the university faces a $3 million tuition shortfall and $2.9 million in unpaid student fees.
A data-sharing agreement will redirect qualified LSU applicants to UNO, while $59 million in deferred maintenance and $13.5 million in technology upgrades are prioritized.
A final transition plan must be submitted to lawmakers by April 1, with a SACSCOC substantive change review expected in 2026.
