Supreme Court to hear challenge to political parties' pre-election freebie promises, citing threats to democracy and fair elections.
The Supreme Court will hear in March a public interest litigation challenging political parties' promises of "irrational freebies" before elections, arguing such practices undermine democratic integrity, distort fair competition, and violate constitutional principles.
Filed by lawyer Ashwini Updhyaya, the plea urges the Election Commission to revoke symbols or deregister parties making such promises, and seeks amendments to election rules and legislation to ban pre-election freebie pledges funded by public money.
The court, which previously called the issue serious, noted freebie budgets sometimes exceed regular government spending and emphasized the need to protect electoral fairness ahead of upcoming state assembly elections.
