Newcastle names a lane Adolphe Lane, honoring a French shipwreck from 1904, after community support and official approval.
The City of Newcastle has named a Stockton lane Adolphe Lane, honoring the French barque wrecked in 1904, following a consultation with 30 submissions, two-thirds of which supported the name for its maritime history.
Concerns were raised over the name’s resemblance to "Adolf," prompting emotional responses from some residents, but the council affirmed the decision reflected community preference.
The NSW Geographical Names Board has approved the name, which is now officially gazetted.
The 600-meter lane runs from Flint Street to an unnamed road, with the ship’s bow visible near the northern harbour breakwall.
