The senators, part of a group known as “The Nine,” argued their removal violated party bylaws and their rights, claiming retaliation for dissenting from party leadership.
Judge Chris Abbott ruled courts cannot compel political parties to hold new elections, as they are private organizations protected by freedom of association.
He noted legislative immunity does not shield lawmakers from consequences imposed by private groups.
The Montana Republican Party welcomed the decision, affirming its right to exclude members who don’t align with its principles.
The senators’ attorney said they are considering appeals to protect lawmakers’ ability to vote independently.
