A Irish GP faces sanctions after failing to act on a sick child’s worsening symptoms, leading to her death from a treatable infection.
A Cork GP, Dr. Joyce Leader, is set to face professional sanctions after a Medical Council inquiry found three instances of poor performance in her handling of a 10-year-old girl’s worsening illness, which led to her death from a treatable Group A Strep infection in March 2019.
The inquiry focused on a February 19, 2019, phone consultation where Dr. Leader failed to arrange an urgent in-person assessment despite the child’s severe pain and inability to walk, did not refer her to emergency care promptly, and did not convey the urgency to her parents, even though septic arthritis was considered.
The girl had been seen five days earlier with symptoms including fever, rash, and severe pain, and was initially diagnosed with a viral infection.
The 2023 inquest concluded her death resulted from medical misadventure due to delayed diagnosis.
Dr. Leader admitted fault in her handling of the case.
