A Hungarian court sentenced German non-binary activist Maja T. to eight years in prison for alleged involvement in violent attacks during a 2023 far-right event in Budapest.
A Hungarian court has sentenced Maja T., a 25-year-old German non-binary anti-fascist activist, to eight years in prison for allegedly participating in violent attacks during a 2023 far-right commemoration in Budapest.
Prosecutors said she was part of the militant left-wing group Antifa Ost, which targeted attendees of the event using batons, rubber hammers, and pepper spray, injuring nine people, four seriously.
She was extradited from Germany in 2024 despite a prior ruling by Germany’s Constitutional Court warning of potential discrimination and human rights violations.
The trial has drawn international criticism over concerns about judicial fairness, Hungary’s treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals, and political motivations, particularly ahead of national elections.
The verdict is under appeal.
