A Frenchman detained at the U.S. border for an expired visa was held in harsh conditions, lost weight, and was released on bail with a deadline to leave.
Julien Pereira, a 26-year-old Frenchman who lived in the U.S. for seven years after moving at 17 to play college tennis, was detained by U.S. authorities after being denied entry to Canada due to an expired student visa.
He was arrested by Border Patrol, transferred to an ICE facility in Batavia, New York, and held in a crowded cell with 80 men, shackled for 24 hours, denied water, and subjected to loud music and poor conditions.
He lost seven kilograms, endured severe mental distress, and was released on $5,000 bail with an ankle monitor and a 15-day deadline to leave.
Though he had no family or business ties in the U.S., he criticized the system as inhumane and damaging to America’s global image.
NPR sought but did not receive a response from ICE.
