U.S. First Lady Melania Trump said on Wednesday she is continuing talks with Russian officials, including through channels linked to President Vladimir Putin, to secure the return of Ukrainian children taken since the 2022 invasion. She cited ongoing communication following a letter she sent to Putin in August 2025, delivered by her husband, President Donald Trump. Since launching her advocacy, 15 Ukrainian children have been returned, including seven in December. Ukraine alleges Russia abducted at least 19,000 children, a claim Russia denies, saying they were relocated for safety. Despite a recent major Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine, Russian and Ukrainian officials described U.S.-led peace talks as “productive.” Melania Trump also met with two freed Israeli American hostages at the White House.
