WorkSafe is investigating Club Wyndham Dunsborough after the Appelbee family was swept out to sea on a kayak and paddleboards during rough weather.
The family drifted 14 kilometers and spent eight hours at sea before being rescued, saying they expected the hotel to alert authorities when their equipment wasn’t returned.
A coast guard warning against renting water gear that day was reported, and peak winds reached 57 km/h.
The hotel said guests are free to use equipment until late and are aware the beach is unpatrolled, but confirmed a safety review.
The family’s mother suggested hotels provide dry bags for phones.
